On buses up to 1964 the shaft is spring loaded so you can disengage the wiper arm and swing it into the middle, to open up the windows.

To use you simply pully the wiper out and rotate to park against the one eyed duck (available separately). To engage just reverse the process.
For 65-67 you can only use the adaptors that are mounted on the outside, available here
